The daisies represent the innocence of her youth.

Blue delphinium represents her boldness in taking a risk to have a better life.

The red carnation represents her need to be independent.

The white freesia represent her pure spirit.

The gladiolus positioned towards the end of her journey, represents the strength of character she gained, which enabled her to testify before the U.S. Senate.

This original art work by Gayle Christie was featured in an art exhibit in the Houston Galleria April 22 - May 2nd, 2005 , Entitled "Give The Gift of Freedom, Human Trafficking Through the Eyes of the Victims". (PowerPoint presentation) 3,000 people passed by and read the essays, extraordinary stories of young victims beaten, coerced, kidnapped or forced into the sex trade.. A few of the titles were:

  • Innocence Lost – as seen through the eyes of a child of nine.

  • Patterns of Lies (people we thought we could trust)

  • Locked Room at Noon (images of young women hired for sex)

  • Death Bed

The show is available for exhibition by special arrangement for other groups working to defeat human trafficking in the world.

Rosa, 13 years old, is from Vera Cruz, Mexico. She was working as a waitress, when she was approached by two men, who lured her and several other girls, with the promise of a better life in the United States. She was trucked through Houston destined for Orlando, Florida, where she was forced to work as a prostitute in a trailer park, serving up to 30 men daily. She was beaten and threatened. Turning to drugs to numb herself and having an abortion, she was then miraculously freed when two girls escaped to summon authorities.

The festive, rich, deep colors of the flowers depict her native Latin home. The flow of the flowers begins with Rosa’s innocent abduction and continues with her internal torment. Realizing the dark situation in which she finds herself, due to her own decision, she struggles to cope, and tries desperately to hold on to a glimmer of hope. Through a Godly intervention, she is miraculously rescued, which then begins the journey of healing her badly abused body, and shattered spirit.
