Growing up
surrounded by gardens, I learned
to love flowers early in life.
My mother was a master at
gardening and had beautiful
flowers everywhere around our
Kansas farm house. We always had
fresh flowers on the table.
Scents evoke memories, to this
day rose petal potpourri reminds
me of the peaceful memories of
being home on a sunny afternoon
in my mother’s garden.
Freeze dried rose petal
potpourri is not only beautiful,
but combined with scent can be
very therapeutic. Science says
that all scents have their
purpose. Scented oils were used
in practically every culture in
some way. The Greeks were the
ones to study the effects of
scent on thinking, feeling and
health. The Romans used flowers
in excessive amounts and held
them in high esteem. During
their festivals, they use
thousands and thousand of blooms
to decorate streets, homes and
themselves.
We are now beginning to realize
how important scent is. At
birth, a mother and child bond
through odor; in the business
world, experts are finding that
certain scents can induce us to
work more efficiently. In Tokyo,
an architectural-engineering
construction firm has found that
diffusing the scented oils of
lavender, jasmine, or lemon in
the areas where computer and
keypunch operators work reduces
their stress levels. In the
medical field, technicians are
experimenting with scent to
relax people undergoing a
diagnostic procedure that is not
painful, but is lengthy and
confining, triggering a
claustrophobic reaction in many
that makes the procedure hard to
complete. It has been found that
the scent of lavender diminishes
their feelings of panic.
Studies have found that freeze
dried rose petal potpourri
combined with fragrance can
stimulate or calm us, shape
positive or negative memories,
or induce sweet dreams.
Europeans have been
incorporating scent in their
health-care practices for
decades using rooms in spas
where specific essences and
perfumes are piped in. In the
United States, we have known
about scent and its effects on
the mind, although it has been a
somewhat unconscious enterprise.
Our sensitivity to odor is both
genetic and learned as we relate
to our environment. Studies show
that babies are born having odor
preferences, with girls being
more interested in scent than
boys. Later in life, as
experiences and memories are
built up, smell associations are
stored in the brain so that we
associate certain memories with
smell.
Freeze dried rose petal
potpourri is the delight of
flower lovers. The rose is the
staple of this art. There are
potpourri recipes that have been
handed down for centuries. A
potpourri is simply a mixture of
dried, fragrant petals and
leaves, mixed together with
spices from the kitchen, along
with orange or lemon peel if
desired, and placed in jars and
bowls that can be uncovered
whenever you want to fill the
room with a pleasant sent.
Freeze dried rose petal
potpourri often contain
additional materials such as
small cones or bark chips which
add texture and interest.
A few flowers that are good to
use because of their scent
properties are jasmine, violet,
thyme, rosemary, hyssop,
marjoram, honeysuckle, sweet
cicely, pineapple mint, or lemon
verbena. Others are useful for
their beauty, marigold petals,
chamomile, rosemary, or
bergamot.
When someone describes their
favorite flower, the one they
mention the most is a rose and
then they describe the color.
Freeze dried rose petal
potpourri combined with scented
oils can calm your spirits, but
the colors also have different
meanings. The “psychology of
color” is not a new concept; in
fact, it dates back to the
Victorian era when each flower
color sent a precise message.
Check to see if your favorite
color of your freeze dried rose
petal potpourri reflects your
true emotions.
